Throughout September, our contributors are sharing their thoughts on the fruits of the Spirit.
I've experienced two memorable instances of JOY this summer. This one is the first time my granddaughter spent the night at our house. Here we are enJOYing a tea party of imaginary tea served in PlayDoh cups. I cannot express how much fun it is to play with a child, especially one who loves to play with you, too. I hope that everyone can experience a JOY similar to this one. God's love surely is expressed in the eyes and hearts of children.
This JOYful photo was taken at the Iowa State Fair this August at the Milking Booth.
Raised in the 'burbs by parents who escaped the farm, cow milking was never something anyone let me try. My mom says that she went to college so she would never have to milk another cow. My grandmother, born in 1889, told her that was because my mother would not be able to afford a cow. Ha!
At any rate, I've been around a few cows, but that's all. When I saw this Iowa State Fair opportunity to milk a cow for $2, I jumped at the chance. As I stood in line with the other 6-year-olds, I was amazed at how "udderly" thrilled I was to get to do this task. I wondered why this mundane task seemed so exciting, and I realized that I was getting to do something totally new to me. God's delights come in the most ordinary of packages. We should watch for them more carefully.
